True, they're just compiling info that's already out there, but they do a damn fine job of it.

I found these Video Dog features especially enjoyable:

Proof of Cheney's Evil (from Letterman)
Brownie's Balls (from The Daily Show)

Enjoy!

Huzzah to The Onion!

I'm not sure how many loyal Podcast subscribers there are out there, but, if you are, you have to subscribe to The Onion Radio News.

Recent stand-outs include:

Abusive Obsessive-Compulsive Has To Punch Wife Exactly 20 Times

U.S. Teens Lead World In Pregnancy-Test Scores

Jerry Lewis Undergoes Emergency Gefloigel Surgery (especially funny)

Christian Porn Film Climaxes With Birth Of Child (the name of the porn? I knew of Feist from Broken Social Scene, and had heard Mushaboom, her "radio hit," but I hadn't heard her solo album. Well, this show completely kicked my ass, and I have been listening to Let it Die non-stop ever since.

Jason Collett, also of Broken Social Scene, opened the show with his band Paso Mino. I supposed they could be considered 'Americana' (Would this be 'Canadiana' then?), which I generally am not a huge fan of. That is, I generally don't choose to listen to it. That being said, I was extremely impressed with Collett and his music. It was catchy, slightly jangly, just poppy enough, with the occasional BSS/Wilco-esque freak out parts. All in all, I loved it. His band was extremely tight, and Feist (who he called 'Feist's back-up singer') joined him on vocals on one tune, and on drums on 'I'll bring the Sun'. It was amazing to see all 5 feet of her rockin' out on drums, and completely kicking ass. Needless to say, my hopes for her set were extremely high...

...and her set did not let me down at all. It was amazing. She started her set with a looped vocal piece, layering gorgeous harmonized vocal line on top of gorgeous harmonized vocal line. It was like a more organic version of Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek. She would use this to great effect on her vocals throughout the show, as well as on guitar, laying a rhythm guitar line that she would base a song on, doing vocals and lead parts on top of it. Her guitar work was phenomenal, flawless yet very real, and her guitar tone was perfect for her style. (Leading me to whisper to Andy "Must...get...a reverb pedal..."). Her band ranged from four piece (Feist on guitar, with bass, drums, and keys) to ten people on stage, including Jason Collett and his entire band. Even with ten people on-stage, it never felt loose or over the top. Clearly they all follow the BSS school of rock.

This was a rejuvenating show, the kind that makes me angry that I don't go to more shows. Also, it was amazing how fucking good the Fine Line sounded. It rarely sounds full on bad there, but it never sounds good. It goes to show how big a difference a great sound person makes.

Chuck Norris can touch MC Hammer.

Well, until I get the time/motivation to write a post with some substance to it, please enjoy this bit of lunacy:

100 Facts About Chuck Norris

Proof that a 900 year old Frog is infinitely wiser than our President

Yoda Poster
Originally uploaded by massdistraction.

The more I read every day, the more outraged I get with the state of the nation, and the more I feel like the people here are fucking looney. Bobby Brown. He's the funniest thing since R. Kelly. Or maybe it's the other way around, I forget...
C: I have a hard time deciding which is the bigger train wreck or funnier, though I'm leaning towards R. My band Iota is playing at the Fine Line Wendesday, January 4th at 8:00 PM. it's a free show, assuming you print one of the following tickets:

One ticket

Three tickets

As the subject of this post hints at very abstractly, we will be performing a brand new tune called 'Strategic Defense Initiative', which I am absolutely in love with. I can't wait to perform it. It's very vibe-y, and very emotive, but for fucks sake, don't call it Emo. Hope to see many of you at the show...it's 21+, and we're on at 8.

- Dels

PS: Greatest songs ever right now are 'Black Diamonds and Pearls' by Blackalicious and 'John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens. Call it a New Year's resolution if you will. That, and I will post to my Flickr page more frequently as well.

I hope you like the re-design...new template, new colors...exciting! Not that it's any surprise, but my main influence was Apple's aqua color scheme, specifically that of their Mail program. I originally had the background a bit lighter, but the semi .gif files that make the windows look rounded in the theme I've chosen look best with this background color. I'll go two months without going to any shows (boooooo), and then realize "what the hell am I doing!?" and will go to a whole bunch of shows in a row. Right now is one of those times. Here are the shows I have seen/will see over a two week period:

Pixes, Roy Wilkins, 11/11
Iota/Stamps/Acadian 11/13
Starflyer 59/Pedro The Lion 11/17
Superdanger/The Glad Version/Love-Cars 11/19
Sufjan Stevens 11/21
Pert' Near Sandstone (friend of a friend of a friend kind of band...not certain about this one) 11/24
Arcade Fire/Haley Bonar 11/25 (would love to go to this, but I think Turkey day festivities might get in the way)

Good stuff. The shows I've been to thus far have been amazing. The Pixies were great, and you could tell they were loving every minute of it on stage. The Iota/Stamps/Acadian show was quite possibly the greatest night of rock ever. EVER. Starflyer was a bit of a let down (only 2 people on stage with bass and key backing tracks...they did it well, but just not that compelling of a show), but Pedro made up for it. Great show, and great q and a session. The show last night was also amazing. Superdanger was very good indie rock, their sound was much bigger than a 3 piece should indicate, with dual vocalists. Throw a couple of synth lines in there and one of their tunes would be a highlight on The Rapture's 'Echoes', which, yes, is definitely a compliment. I continue to be impressed with The Glad Version; not only are they some of the nicest guys out there (and our new practice space mates), but they really rock. Here's to hoping they can push on and keep their vibe going with losing two original members; I have a good feeling that they will be just fine. And finally the Love-Cars. Oh, how I love thee, with thine infrequent shows and uncertain future. Every show could be their last, you never know, so one should, nee, must see them when you can. Silly Hoff and Wicks and their Kubla Khan show. LC did very well last night...two encores, ending one with '24', and finally with 'CMSBFF'. Shit yeah.

Go. FUCK YEAH!!

So yesterday I went and saw Trey Parker and Matt Stone's epic puppet Bruckheimer-esque fuck you to all things sacred and holy (and therefore annoying) about the U.S.A, Team America: World Police. Oh my dear lord it was funny. I went with Hoff, who enjoys a good comedy as much as anyone I know, and man oh man did we laugh our asses off. TA: WP, much like Trey and Matt's brilliant series/movie South Park, is an equal opportunity offender, aiming square at the foreheads of left and right alike, Christian and Muslim, gay and straight, you name it, they hope to lampoon it. And for the most part they succeed. Their biggest success is in both imitating and mocking the Jerry Bruckheim/Michael Bay school of film, where the plot takes the back seat to epic explosions and musical scenes that might as well be music videos themselves. As proven in the South Park movie, Trey Parker is a musical GENIUS who can write musical satire that hits home even harder than their writing can. Take the following lyric from TA's 'theme song', "America, FUCK YEAH" that plays as they fly to attack and destroy their enemy (and most likely the majority of the city around them as well):

America FUCK YEAH
Comin' again to save the motherfuckin day yeah
America FUCK YEAH....freedom is the only way yeah
terrorists your game is through
cause now you have to answer to
America FUCK YEAH!
So lick my butt and suck on my balls
America FUCK YEAH

F-ing brilliant. Now, you might have noticed that I haven't mentioned anything about the fact that this movie is made entirely with puppets. There's a reason for that.....because it RULES. Actors couldn't have pulled off the emotion that the puppets can in this movie (and who do you really think is a better actor, Ben Affleck, or a piece of wood controlled by strings?? Yeah, I thought so.) Anyways, I've gone on enough. GO SEE THIS MOVIE.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fivedollarwords.blogspot.com/2004/10/should-you-see-team-america-fuck-yeah.html' title='Should you see Team America?? As you can see by their informative and oh-so-blue website, this is a pub crawl in Nordeast Minneapolis where the participants are to go to 14 bars in 14 hours, and have a drink at each establishment. Well, I was there at the first bar at noon, and made my less than graceful exit at about 11:30, after hitting all the bars (even one extra) and having a drink at all but 2. Yes, I knew my limits. Needless to say I felt a bit like hell this morning, but it was a grand time. It was especially nice to get to hang with AGD and Dunoop and Mark after their being at the Dulles colloquium. I missed them all like crazy, and it was wonderful to catch up with them. Yes, I was horrifically jealous that they got to go and I didn't this time, but hey, that's the way it goes, ja?

My Bulimic Post...

Pardon the mildly offensive title, but I figured it was a good summary for the post-not-posting-in-a-while-post. Well, thought you'd never ask!

New car

New computer (Superdrive, 80 GB 5400 RPM HD, wireless Bluetooth Keyboard)

New iPod (40 GB...thank you Apple Store for Education for a $200 rebate when purchased w/ a new laptop)

Logic Express

New bass amplifier

New bass cabinets (2x10, 1x15)

Yeah, so needless to say, I've been dropping cash like it's going out of style. Thank goodness for savings accounts, car leases, and brand new platinum credit cards.

It's with great sadness yet pride that with the new laptop coming I am going to be selling my trusty laptop of many years to my good friend and roommate Jeremy. May it go in peace and serve its new lord.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fivedollarwords.blogspot.com/2004/09/my-bulimic-post.html' title='My Bulimic Post... This part destroys me:

If you are a teenage girl, Usher has a message for you:

He wants to make love to you. (Oh my God! look at the way he looked at our section!)

He is going to be very, very good at it. (Oh My God! Look at him dance and do those push-ups! He's so smooth!)

After he makes love to you, he wants to maybe be your boyfriend and do things to get your parents to like him. (Oh my God! Look at him with those flowers, he is so sweet)

Even if your folks don't like him, he will still continue to make love to you, even if you are wildly unpopular because he sees inside your soul to your inner sexiness, girl.

Three words on Usher: money making machine. Here's my little entry into the blogging world. I've been meaning to do this for quite some time, but have yet to 'go all the way'. Wow, two sentences and I already sound dirty. Sweet.

Anyways, I'll be posting here every now and then to say what's on my mind, reflect on what I've seen in the world at that time, and probably to bitch about the sad political state of our fair nation.

So yesterday was quite the odd day. It started off quite nicely, slept in a bit on my week old queen size Serta mattress, which I am sooooo happy with. I used to have a shitty old twin on a rickety old bed frame that wasn't even mine. Now I have a grown-ups bed (called this because at least 3 people at work called it that when I said it was finally delivered. Strange. Any how, woke up about 9, cleaned up my e-mail box, which hadn't been done in a while, and just lay in bed surfing the web for a couple of hours. I ended up meeting some good friends from work at Fat Lorenzo's, a fantastic Pizza and Pasta joint pretty close to my place with portions worthy of the award that I linked to. It was a very nice time, excellent food, wonderful company, and beautiful weather. While there I got a call from my good friend and band mate Andy Wicks, who was just disc golfing with my other friend, and side-project-band-mate Mark Joesting, (aka Mojo). So, after a bit of loafing at my house post-lunch, I went to Andy's place where we met up with fellow Cathode Rae-ver Kyle Hoff (aka Hoffstra). We decided to go disc golfing using some new discs that Andy had picked up that very day, as well as some of Mojo's collection of discs. I'll defer to Andy's blog for the full story, but the short short version is that we got rear ended by a VW Passat wagon pretty damn hard. I felt fine, with a little stiff neck, but Andy and Kyle felt less that way, so we went to Abbott Northwest Hospital, and they got a clean bill of health and instructions on how to alleviate their pain. Poor guys.

That night we had a show at the Fallout Urban Art Fest, which was very cool, taking up a whole city street block, and including free food and lemonade, a bitchin' wall mural commemorating the occasion, and painting, tilemaking, and bookmaking for kids. They had a medium size stage setup at the end of the block, and we were the only rock-ish band that I saw, the rest were very acoustic, and more outwardly Christian, which is fine. So, we got setup quickly, were rockin' our set, and four songs into it, the extreme rock styling of our drummer Kor, combined with an old bass drum head, resulted in his completely destroying the kick drum head. Well, needless to say, that put an end to our set. I had the wise idea to just put the other side of the head on the pedal-side to help the next band, which worked out pretty well. At least you could hear the kick drum.

All in all, a damn weird day, but much much better than it could have been all things considered. I'm glad to be alive, and glad to be not stiff or sore at all.

Okay, well, all posts shant be of this length, I assure you. Thanks for listening.
